What is an appraisal?

A performance review (or 1-1 review) is a confidential conversation between manager and employee. Although you, as the manager, are responsible for planning and managing the conversation, it is the employee who should do most of the talking. It's important that you as a manager show an interest in the employee's challenges, feedback and skills development, as this can help improve wellbeing and the general working environment in the workplace. Whether the employee is physically in the office or working from home.

Is a performance review required by law?

Employee appraisals are not required by law, but it is still recommended to have frequent conversations between managers and employees. First and foremost, a good and effective conversation will improve communication between manager and employee.

A good performance review template ensures:

  • Closer follow-up of each employee
  • Increased trust between manager and employee
  • Creates motivation through defined actions and goals
  • Facilitates the employee's development
  • Easier for managers to organize tasks
  • Increased productivity and efficiency in the workplace
  • Increased well-being and better working environment among employees
  • Less absence and turnover

Employee appraisal requirements

1-1 conversations (performance appraisals, development appraisals, welfare appraisals or follow-up appraisals) are not a requirement, but you as a manager should initiate performance appraisals with your employees. This can only benefit your business in a positive way!

Employee appraisals in practice

Show up prepared

It's important that you take plenty of time to plan the meeting. What do you want to achieve with the conversation? Do you want to clarify goals for the next quarter or half-year? What topics should be addressed? And how will the tasks be carried out?

Conducting performance reviews

But how do you conduct a good performance review? The first thing you need to think about is where the meeting will take place. Should it be in the manager's office? In one of the team rooms? Or will it be adigital performance review? One tip is to try to have the meeting in unfamiliar surroundings. Perhaps it's possible to have the meeting over a cup of coffee outdoors?

Create an activity plan

At the end of the performance review, it's important to set up an activity plan. Create a master plan, or work plan, with the topics discussed in the meeting in mind. This could include goals and any other actions that were discussed.
