Skills challenges in the construction industry can be very complex for a number of reasons, and below I've put together a list of the very common challenges faced by leaders in the industry today with suggested solutions on what is required to solve them.

  • Technological development The industry is going through significant technological changes, including the use of building information modeling (BIM), automation, drones, and the Internet of Things (IoT). This requires employees to have the skills to work with advanced tools and technologies.

  • Safety and compliance requirements The construction industry has strict safety and compliance requirements, requiring employees to be properly trained and certified to carry out their work safely. Requirements vary from project to project and from site to site.

  • Project variations Every construction project can be unique, with different skills requirements depending on the project size, type, location and specifications. This requires flexibility in adapting the workforce and skills to each project.
  • Diversity of professions The construction industry has a number of different professions with different skills requirements, including engineers, architects, craftsmen, project managers and more. Coordinating the skills of different professions can be challenging.
  • Age and retirement Many experienced workers in the industry are retiring, and it can be difficult to replace the experience-based expertise they bring with them. Ensuring knowledge transfer to younger generations is an important challenge.
  • Lack of availability of specialists Some specialists in areas such as sustainable construction, green technologies and advanced project management can be scarce, and it can be challenging to recruit and retain such experts.
  • Lack of professional development Providing continuous training and development for employees can be a challenge in an industry where projects often have tight deadlines and high workloads.
  • Seasonality Some regions experience seasonal variations that affect workforce availability. Managing seasonal fluctuations in staffing can be challenging.

In conclusion, leaders are required to take a proactive and strategic approach to skills management. This can help ensure that the organization has the right skills at all times to meet industry demands and achieve success on both a short-term and long-term basis. Furthermore, robust HR systems with industry-specific modules, training programs, competency management strategies and the ability to adapt to industry changes are recommended to address these complex competency challenges in the construction industry.
